# Email follow-up reminder if no reply: Gmail, Outlook and more

> How to get reminded when an email gets no reply: Gmail nudges, Outlook follow-up flags, Apple Mail, Spark, Boomerang and Command Mail, with steps and limits.

This guide shows which mail apps suggest unanswered emails to follow up on and where you can set a reminder time yourself. Gmail does this as an automatic nudge, and Outlook with a follow-up flag and reminder that, according to Microsoft, you clear yourself once someone answers.[^1][^3][^5] Reminders that only fire when nobody replies come from Apple Mail as a suggestion, Spark, the Boomerang extension for Gmail, and Command Mail, which is our product.[^6][^8][^9]

## What you end up with

For the emails you are waiting on, you will know where your mail app nudges you on its own and where you set the reminder time yourself. You will also know which tools only remind you when nobody has replied, how to close a reminder once an answer arrives, and which tool can send a follow-up email by itself.

## Prerequisites

What you need depends on the tool:

- **Gmail:** a computer with a browser, and conversation view turned on. Without it, Gmail shows no nudges.[^1][^2]
- **Outlook:** Microsoft's detailed steps with a reminder apply to Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016, which is classic desktop Outlook.[^4] For Outlook.com, Microsoft describes flagging with a reminder in shorter form.[^5]
- **Apple Mail:** the Mail app on your iPhone.[^6]
- **Spark:** the Spark app. Spark says its reminders work locally in the app only.[^8]
- **Boomerang:** the Boomerang extension for Gmail. Its free Basic plan includes 10 message credits per month.[^10]
- **Command Mail:** your sent email has to be in Command Mail, because you sent it there or imported it with the CLI, and the reply has to arrive there too, for example through your forwarding.[^12] Sending from Command Mail is part of Pro; Free does not send.[^11]

## Which option fits?

| Tool | When it reminds you | Reply condition | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gmail nudges | Gmail decides, no date | Not described in the source | Suggestions at the top of the inbox only |
| Outlook follow-up flag with reminder | At the time you choose | None documented; you clear it after a reply | Automatic end on reply not described |
| Apple Mail Follow Up Suggestions | After several days | Reminds you if no response came by then | You can't set the timing |
| Spark | At your chosen time, up to two months ahead on desktop | Reminds you if no one replied by then | Inside the Spark app only |
| Boomerang | At your chosen time | Reminds you if no reply came by then | Can also send the follow-up for you |
| Command Mail | At your chosen time, up to a year ahead | Reminds you at the set time unless a matching reply was detected | Only for sent email that is in Command Mail |

The table reflects the vendors' help pages as fetched on 2026-10-31 and, for Command Mail, our app code.[^1][^3][^5][^6][^8][^9]

## Turn on follow-up nudges in Gmail

The Gmail nudges documented by Google don't let you choose a date. What they do is suggest, at the top of your inbox, sent emails you may need to follow up on.[^1]

1. Open Gmail on your computer and click `Settings` → `See all settings` at the top right.
2. Stay on the `General` tab.
3. Next to "Nudges", select `Suggest emails to follow up on`. If you also want reminders about mail you received and haven't answered, select `Suggest emails to reply to`.
4. Click `Save Changes` at the bottom.

Google's wording is that you "may see" these suggestions, and it does not say after how long a sent email qualifies.[^1] Turning off conversation view hides nudges altogether.[^2]

## Boomerang for Gmail: remind me only if there's no reply

Boomerang adds a conditional reminder to Gmail. While writing, you tick `Remind me` and pick a time. For an email you already sent, select it in your Sent folder, click the Boomerang button and tick `if no reply`. If the recipient has not replied by then, Boomerang brings the email back to your inbox.[^9]

Boomerang can also send a follow-up for you. You write it, click `Send Later` and tick `if no reply`; if nobody answers, it goes out automatically at the scheduled time. If the recipient replies first, Boomerang cancels it and offers to send, view or edit the message anyway.[^9] Think about whether a follow-up that leaves without a final look suits the situation before you use this.

Boomerang's pricing page lists Personal at $4.98, Pro at $14.98 and Premium at $49.98 per month, each billed annually, next to the free Basic plan. New accounts get a 30-day trial of Boomerang Professional without a credit card.[^10]

## Classic Outlook: flag a sent email and add a reminder

In classic Outlook you flag the email for yourself before sending it. The flag adds a to-do item in Tasks, and with a reminder Outlook opens an alert dialog at the time you set, the same kind you see for meetings.[^4]

1. Write the email, and before you send it select `Message` → `Follow Up`.
2. Pick Today, Tomorrow, This Week, Next Week, No Date or Custom.
3. For an alert, also select `Follow Up` → `Add Reminder` and enter the date and time.
4. Send the email.

Microsoft recommends adding the reminder because the email is otherwise out of sight in Sent Items.[^4] When the answer comes in, you close the item yourself: right-click the flag and choose `Mark Complete` or `Clear Flag`. From the reply, you can jump back to the original via the InfoBar and `Open original flagged message`.[^3]

Outlook can also flag the email for the recipients, with or without a reminder on their side. Microsoft's advice is to use that with discretion, since not everyone appreciates reminders added to their Outlook.[^3][^4]

Two limits from Microsoft's help: with an IMAP account you can't change the flag text or set start and due dates, and if an Exchange account moves sent items into a .pst file, finding responses to flagged messages stops working.[^3]

On Outlook.com you select an email, choose `Flag/Unflag` on the message or the ribbon, and pick when you want to be reminded about it. `Filter` → `Flagged` lists everything you flagged. Microsoft's short instructions there don't show a detailed date-and-time dialog.[^5]

## iPhone: Follow Up Suggestions in Apple Mail

Apple Mail reminds you without any setup. If you send an email and don't receive a response for several days, Apple says the message moves back to the top of your inbox. To turn it off, go to `Settings` → `Apps` → `Mail` and switch off `Follow Up Suggestions`.[^6]

Apple's help does not say how many days it waits. Separately, Remind Me lets you pick a date and time to bring back a Primary message you received; Apple names no reply condition for it.[^7]

## Spark: remind me if no one replies

In Spark for Mac or Windows you set the reminder while you write: an icon at the top of the compose window lets you choose when Spark should remind you if no one replies, and a custom date can be up to two months ahead. For an email already sent, open the Sent folder, select it, and use `All Actions` → `Remind Me` at the top. On iPhone and Android, tap the Reminder icon at the bottom of a sent email instead.[^8]

When the time passes without an answer, the email shows up in your inbox again so you can write a follow-up. All pending reminders live in the Reminders folder. Spark notes that they work locally: you won't see them in another email app or on your provider's webmail.[^8]

## Command Mail: wait for a reply

Command Mail is our product. What follows comes from llms.txt and the documentation, both fetched on 2026-10-31, and from our app code at commit `2761576`.[^11][^12] In the app the feature is called "Wait for a reply", and it is a reminder, not a deadline.

1. Send the email from Command Mail. Sending comes with Pro, €19 per month as the founder price for the first 100 paying Pro accounts and €29 per month after that; Free does not send.[^11]
2. Open the conversation. Below your message you'll see `Your message is out. Wait for a reply?`. Click `Wait for a reply …`.
3. Choose `in 2 days`, `in 3 days` or `in 7 days`, or enter a custom time and click `Set`. Times use your browser's time zone.
4. The conversation now shows `Waiting for a reply.` with the recipient, the send date and the reminder time.

Once the time has passed, the note changes to "Follow-up due." with `Draft a follow-up`, `Done`, `Remind me later`, `Change date` and `Stop waiting`. `Draft a follow-up` opens the composer for your follow-up. You or your agent write the text; according to the code, Command Mail has no built-in writing assistant for customers.

The Today overview lists waiting and recently answered reminders under "Waiting for replies", up to 200; due ones also appear in the morning brief under "Follow-ups".[^12] On Free, reminders for messages the plan hides are left out. None of this sends anything.

### How Command Mail decides that someone replied

The wait ends at the next reconciliation once an incoming email with text of its own sits in the same conversation after your message; the note then reads "Reply received.". It does not count messages whose subject starts like an out-of-office or a bounce notice, system senders such as mailer-daemon or no-reply, mail in Spam or Trash, and messages that only quote your earlier text. This is pattern matching and can be wrong, for example with an auto-reply that uses an unusual subject line.

Anyone in the conversation can end the wait, not only the person you wrote to. A reply belongs to the conversation when its headers reference a message in it. If the reply references do not identify a stored message, Command Mail tries to match by subject, ignoring "Re:" and "Fwd:", and by the sender appearing in a non-draft message with that subject less than 180 days old. Where a domain is set, matching stays within that domain. A new email with a different subject and no matching reply reference therefore leaves the reminder running.

Reconciliation happens whenever the app or the REST API loads the list, plus an hourly background run. When an agent reads the list over MCP, it sees a detected reply right away, but that read does not store it.

### Limits

A reminder needs a message of yours in the conversation that your mail provider accepted; drafts and failed sends don't count. According to the code, sent mail gets into Command Mail when you send it from Command Mail or import it: imported sent mail counts as your own outgoing mail when its sender address belongs to a connected mailbox and an explicitly chosen target mailbox matches it. Forwarding your incoming mail does not bring it in. Email you send straight from Gmail or Outlook is therefore unknown to Command Mail until you import it, and it is usually simpler to set the reminder where you sent it.

Each conversation can have one open reminder, and the time has to be in the future and no more than a year ahead. We found no push or email notification for due reminders in the code; browser push there only covers newly received mail. You see due reminders when you open Command Mail or when your agent asks.

### From the CLI or an agent

In a terminal, `commandmail follow-ups add <email-id> --in 3d` sets a reminder. `commandmail follow-ups list` shows waiting and recently answered ones, `commandmail follow-ups done <id>` closes one, and `commandmail follow-ups snooze <id> --in 2d` pushes it back.

An agent uses the MCP tools `set_follow_up`, `list_follow_ups` and `update_follow_up`, covered by the `mail:read` permission.[^12] Reading the list works at any level. Adding a reminder is refused on `read` and allowed from `suggest` upward, while closing or moving one needs `auto`, because that hides something from you. Reminders an agent created are labelled "set by an agent".

The reminder itself never sends. Whether your agent then follows up depends on its permissions: it sends on its own only with `mail:send` from mailboxes set to `auto`. With `mail:draft` it saves a draft for your approval, and with `mail:send-approved` it sends a version you approved on `suggest`, `rules` or `auto`; on `read` that is blocked too.[^11]

## Did it work?

In Outlook, the sent email carries a flag and appears in Tasks.[^4] In Spark, it is in the Reminders folder.[^8] In Gmail, check that the setting was saved; whether a nudge shows up is Gmail's call.[^1]

In Command Mail, the conversation shows `Waiting for a reply.` and the Today overview lists it under `Waiting for replies`. To test the whole loop, write to a second address of your own and reply from there. After the next reconciliation, the conversation says "Reply received.".

## Troubleshooting

**Gmail shows no nudges.** Check that conversation view is on. Without it there are none, and even with it Google promises nothing.[^1][^2]

**Outlook reminds you although the reply is already there.** Microsoft does not describe the reminder ending on its own when a reply arrives. Mark the flag complete or clear it.[^3]

**Outlook won't let you set a due date.** Microsoft says that isn't possible with IMAP accounts.[^3]

**Your Spark reminder is missing on webmail.** Spark reminders only exist in the Spark app.[^8]

**Command Mail doesn't offer "Wait for a reply".** The offer only appears when the newest message shown is one of yours that the provider accepted and no reminder is running yet. If there is no suitable message of yours to anchor on, Command Mail refuses with the error code `no_sent_message`. In the app, the note reads `This conversation has no message of yours that the provider accepted yet.`

**Command Mail says `This conversation already has a reminder.`** Use `Change date` on the existing one.

**An auto-reply ended the wait.** Send your follow-up and set a new reminder afterwards. As long as a detected reply follows your last message, Command Mail refuses a new one with "The other side already answered after your last message.".

**Your agent gets the error code `autonomy_read`.** The mailbox is set to `read`, or the agent tried to close or move a reminder below `auto`. In the app, the matching note reads "Not allowed for this mailbox."

## Next steps

Set the reminder when you hit send, not once you notice the silence. ## Sources and date

As of 2026-10-31. All help pages from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Spark and Boomerang and Command Mail's public pages were fetched that day. Statements about Command Mail also rely on the app code at commit `2761576`, including `follow-ups.ts`, `threads.ts` and the interface strings. This guide does not include our own test of the Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, Spark or Boomerang menus.[^1][^3][^6][^8][^9]

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Gmail have a follow-up reminder for sent emails?

Only as an automatic suggestion. In Settings, on the General tab, turn on "Suggest emails to follow up on" next to Nudges. Gmail may then show sent emails you might need to follow up on at the top of your inbox. Google's help describes no way to pick a date, and conversation view has to be on.

### Can Outlook remind me if nobody replies?

Classic Outlook can remind you about a sent email at a time you choose: flag it for yourself before sending and add a reminder. Microsoft's help does not describe the reminder ending automatically when a reply arrives. When an answer comes in, you mark the flag complete or clear it yourself.

### How does the iPhone remind me about unanswered emails?

Apple Mail moves a sent message back to the top of your inbox if you don't get a response for several days. Apple calls this Follow Up Suggestions, and you can turn it off in Settings, Apps, Mail. You don't choose the timing yourself.

### Does Command Mail send a follow-up email automatically?

No. A Command Mail reminder never sends or moves anything. When it is due, you open the composer for your follow-up and send your follow-up yourself. An agent only sends on its own with the mail:send permission from a mailbox set to auto; with mail:draft it saves drafts for you to approve.

### How long should I wait before following up?

It depends on what you asked for; there is no fixed rule. Command Mail offers two, three and seven days as presets, or a custom time up to a year ahead. If you need the answer by a certain date, set the reminder a few days before it rather than on the day itself.
