Why can't Claude read my Gmail attachments?

Claude's built-in Gmail connector exposes attachment metadata, not direct access to attachment contents, according to Anthropic. Finding a message and naming its PDF therefore does not mean Claude has read that PDF[1]. To analyse the file, supply it through a supported file route, such as a chat upload or Google Drive.

The documented Gmail connector and Claude’s separate document-processing routes have different capabilities. Check the tools of any third-party Gmail server separately. The practical task is to identify which part of the retrieval chain has stopped: finding the message, obtaining the file, or interpreting its contents.

01Check what the answer is actually based on

An attachment listing can establish that a file exists without supplying its contents. Anthropic explicitly distinguishes attachment metadata from attachment content in the Gmail integration[1]. If an assistant reports a filename, do not treat that as evidence for a total, date or clause inside the document.

Consider a purchasing team asking for the delivery dates in three supplier quotations. The email bodies may contain only a greeting and a reference to an attached quotation. Summarising those bodies cannot produce the delivery terms. Ask the assistant to label each source as message text, attachment metadata, an uploaded file or a Drive document. It should leave a term unknown when the supporting file has not been read.

ObservationWhat it establishesWhat remains to check
A matching Gmail message appearsA message was retrievedIs it the correct supplier and version?
A PDF filename is returnedAttachment metadata is available[1]Has any route supplied the PDF itself?
The answer mentions a priceA number was found or inferredIs the number supported by the actual quotation?
A separate file is suppliedA document route is available[2]Does the response cite the relevant content?

An open request in Anthropic's connector repository asks for retrieval of Gmail attachment content[5]. It illustrates the need but is a user report, not a test conducted for this page. Neither that request nor a successful attachment listing establishes the capabilities of every Gmail integration.

02Use a deliberate upload for one document

For an occasional attachment, downloading and uploading the specific file makes the handoff visible. Google documents downloading from the message's attachment card where downloading is permitted. Confidential-mode messages prevent downloading and copying[4]. First check the original message so that the file belongs to the conversation you intend to analyse.

A useful document review sequence is:

  1. Confirm the sender, message date and subject in Gmail. Identify the current revision if several files have similar names.
  2. Download the selected attachment, then add it to the Claude chat with the plus button or by dragging it into the conversation[2]. Downloading it to your computer alone does not give the chat access.
  3. Ask a bounded question, such as: “Read this quotation. Extract the delivery window and cancellation terms, with the location of each passage. Mark unreadable sections as unknown.”
  4. Compare those passages with the original file before making a decision or preparing a reply.

Keep the file route's limits separate from the connector's limits. Anthropic documents up to 500 MB per file and 20 files per chat. PDFs of up to 100 pages receive text and visual processing; PDFs of 101–1000 pages receive text-only processing, and longer PDFs are rejected. Non-PDF documents do not expose embedded images. XLSX uploads require code execution and file creation to be enabled[2]. Consult that documentation when an upload fails or important visual information is missing. Compare the extracted delivery dates and terms with the document itself.

Use only material that you are permitted to share for the task. For a purchase-order check, the necessary document may be one quotation rather than an entire supplier archive. Retain enough context to match the result back to its source, without adding unrelated correspondence to the chat.

03Google Drive is a separate document route

Saving an attachment to Drive can provide a repeatable file handoff, but it is still an extra step. The Gmail connector does not automatically turn an attachment into a Drive document. Anthropic documents a Drive reader for PDFs, images and Office files; its stated reading behaviour extracts text and does not process images embedded in documents[1].

Google notes that some attachments cannot be added to Drive[4]. Where permitted, hover over the attachment in Gmail and choose “Add to Drive”[4]. Then use the chat's plus button and “Add from Google Drive,” or provide a supported Drive file link[1]. Check the selected file against the original email's date, subject and version. An answer based on a previous quotation may look plausible while being unusable for the current order.

Try the chosen route on a low-risk sample before designing a larger process. For a scanned attachment, establish whether the actual content you need reaches the assistant. Searching Gmail again will not repair a file-reading boundary. This page does not claim to have configured or tested an automatic system for copying attachments to Drive.

04Investigate missing messages separately

An unsuccessful search and an unreadable attachment require different remedies. Anthropic says some advanced Gmail filters may not be supported, complex requests may require several API calls, Google API quotas apply, and performance can vary for large mailboxes[1]. Those statements do not establish a universal limit of a fixed number of searchable emails.

Start a diagnostic search with a known sender, a narrow date range and a distinctive subject term. Ask for the matching messages with dates and source links before requesting a synthesis. Check a known message in Gmail itself. That distinguishes a retrieval problem from the expected state where a message is available but the attached file is not.

For a batch review, define the intended set explicitly: for example, quotations received from a named vendor within a specified period. Ask which messages were actually considered and whether retrieval stopped before the set was covered. Compare the messages considered with the set you defined before accepting a batch result.

05Review account access and data handling

Anthropic says Claude uses the connected Google account and mirrors its existing permissions. Team and Enterprise owners must enable the connectors before members authenticate, and Google Workspace administration can impose an additional access decision[1]. Being connected therefore does not by itself establish access to every expected source.

Disconnecting a service is also different from removing content already retrieved. Anthropic states that connector data is stored with its associated chat. Its no-training description for Gmail, Drive and Calendar connector data has exceptions for content brought into a conversation, including this consumer-product case: when model-improvement sharing is enabled, pasted material and responses containing specific connector information may be used for improvement[1][8]. Check the applicable account and data settings before transferring confidential material.

Team and Enterprise owners can select a connector under “Customize > Connectors,” open “Tool permissions,” and set a tool or category to “Always allow,” “Needs approval” or “Blocked.” These restrictions apply across the organisation and cannot be overridden by individual members[3]. Individual users toggle connectors for a chat through the plus menu under “Connectors”[3]. Gmail is not simply a read-only connector: Anthropic documents sending, replying and forwarding, with approval requested by default. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members may allow these actions without a separate approval each time[1]. A request to inspect an attachment should remain clearly distinguished from a request to send. See Can Claude send emails? for that separate workflow.

06Evaluate another tool by the complete file path

The native connector may be sufficient when most work concerns message text and an occasional document can be supplied explicitly. If your task repeatedly depends on many attachments, evaluate how a candidate system gets from a message to usable file content before choosing it. Request a demonstration of the required file retrieval and reading steps in your intended client.

Command Mail is our product. It receives forwarded or imported messages into a separate inbox rather than synchronising changes with the original Gmail mailbox[7]. In a Claude browser chat, Command Mail’s hosted MCP also initially returns only metadata and a download_url, through get_thread and list_attachments. Automatic attachment reading in that browser chat has not been demonstrated here. Obtaining the file is a separate authenticated request, checked against mail:read, account ownership and plan visibility. That URL is not a public sharing link, and the tool result does not automatically place the PDF contents in the model context. Your agent client must support the additional authenticated retrieval and subsequent file processing; an ordinary URL preview is not enough.

The local MCP adapter also exposes download_attachment, which saves the file and reports its path. The agent still needs suitable file-reading tools to interpret it. Neither metadata nor a download establishes OCR support. Check the original if an attachment is missing or was not fully retained on intake. These technical statements come from our own implementation review on 2026-10-18 of app commit d6ad1ce01c3259fc0c9721b79bbf6450458a4bc8. We reviewed the MCP output, authenticated file retrieval and local adapter in code; we did not perform a real-mailbox or file-reading test.

Use a harmless sample to verify four outcomes: find the source email, retrieve its attachment, identify a specific fact in the file and compare it with the original. Command Mail's Free plan provides reading and drafts but does not send; its regular mail history covers one mailbox and the last 90 days[6]. Your own drafts remain visible regardless of age. Setup is covered in Connect Gmail to Claude, with permission boundaries in the autonomy reference.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude read a PDF attachment directly through Gmail?

Anthropic documents attachment metadata, not direct attachment content, in its native Gmail connector. A supported chat upload or separately supplied Drive file uses a different access route.

Why can Claude name my attachment but not quote it?

A filename is metadata. It does not establish that the assistant received the file contents. Ask which accessible source supports any statement about the document.

Does this limit apply to every Gmail MCP server?

No. This page describes the documented native Claude connector. Other servers need their own tool and permission checks.

Is there a fixed maximum number of searchable emails?

The manufacturer documentation checked here notes Google API quotas, possible filter limitations and variable large-mailbox performance. It does not establish a universal numerical mailbox limit.

Do I need Command Mail to work with email attachments?

No. A deliberate upload or Drive handoff may cover occasional files. Consider another mail system only after checking its complete attachment path against your task.
