SaneBox alternatives: sorting, reply drafts and your own agent

If SaneBox no longer fits, there are four directions: the sorting built into Gmail and Outlook at no extra cost, Fyxer or Inbox Zero for sorting plus reply drafts right inside Gmail or Outlook, Mailstrom for clearing out a cluttered inbox in bulk, and Command Mail if you want your own agent, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, to sort and prepare replies.[9][11][12][13][15][16] SaneBox is still the stronger choice if you want to stay in your current mailbox and email app with almost any provider, and since 2026-10-26 its Dinner plan drafts replies too.[2][5]

Command Mail is our product. Everything said here about SaneBox, Fyxer, Inbox Zero and Mailstrom comes from their pricing, help and blog pages as retrieved on 2026-10-29; we have not tested these services ourselves.[1][12][13][15]

01What SaneBox does well

SaneBox works on the mail server you already use. It adds folders such as @SaneLater to your account and moves less important mail into them, so the result shows up in every client and on every device; its FAQ names Gmail, Exchange, Outlook and Yahoo Mail among the setups that work, and only POP accounts are left out because they have no folders.[2] There is nothing to migrate and no forwarding to set up.

Training is a matter of moving mail. If a message lands in the wrong folder, you drag it to the right one and SaneBox adjusts; the FAQ says it looks at signals such as which messages you open and which you answer.[2] If SaneBox itself goes offline, your mail keeps arriving in the inbox, just unsorted until it is back.[2]

Around that core sit a lot of small tools. The help center lists SaneNews for newsletters, SaneBlackHole for senders you never want to hear from again, SaneCC for messages where you are copied, snooze folders, custom training folders such as @SaneReceipts, reminders that also tell you when someone has not replied by your deadline, and the Daily Digest of filtered mail.[3]

Leaving is handled cleanly as well. When you cancel, you choose whether to keep the SaneBox folders or remove them, in which case SaneBox moves their mail back to the inbox.[8] Eligible purchases have a 30-day money-back guarantee, though you have to ask support for the refund; canceling alone does not trigger it.[8]

02New in October 2026: reply drafts inside SaneBox

On 2026-10-26 SaneBox announced its AI Bundle: SaneDrafts for reply drafts, SaneSummary for summaries of your own folders, and AI versions of SaneNoReplies and the Digest. The announcement says the bundle is included on the Dinner plan, and the price data on the pricing page attaches these AI features to Dinner only.[5][1]

SaneDrafts writes into your regular Drafts folder and never sends anything on its own.[4] It skips automated mail such as receipts, shipping notices and newsletters, and threads you have already answered; after you switch it on, drafts usually appear 10 to 15 minutes after a qualifying message arrives.[4] For now you cannot pick which messages get a draft, because SaneDrafts decides where a reply seems appropriate.[4]

SaneBox's own pages describe its data handling in two ways. The FAQ and the privacy policy say SaneBox only analyzes headers and never accesses the body, while the security page says optional features retrieve the body but never store it.[2][7][6] The AI Bundle post adds that email content is not used to train AI and full bodies are not stored; none of the pages we retrieved names the AI provider behind the drafts.[5][4]

03Why people look for a SaneBox alternative

One obvious reason is the plan you end up needing. Snack costs $9.49 a month, $65 a year or $109 for two years and covers one email account with two features; Lunch costs $15.99, $109 or $179 for two accounts and six features.[1] Reply drafts need Dinner at $42.99 a month, $319 a year or $529 for two years, which in turn covers four accounts and every feature.[1]

Features are counted against your plan. Each folder such as @SaneLater or @SaneNews and each custom training folder uses one slot, and once the plan's limit is reached you turn one off before enabling another.[3] If you want SaneLater, newsletters, snoozing and reminders together, Snack's two feature slots are not enough; Lunch has six.[1]

The other reason is an agent you already use. If you work with Claude, ChatGPT or Codex every day, you may want that agent to handle your email, and the SaneBox pages we checked mention no API or MCP connection for it.[1][2][3] The website, pricing and help pages we retrieved were also all in English; sanebox.com/de returned no German version.

05Gmail categories and Outlook Focused Inbox: free and already there

Check what your mail provider already does before paying for sorting. With the Default inbox type, Gmail splits mail into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums; you cannot add your own categories, and the Default type stops working once the inbox holds more than 250,000 messages.[9] Filters handle the rest: matching mail can go to a label, be archived, deleted, starred or forwarded automatically.[10]

Outlook's Focused Inbox shows two tabs, Focused and Other. Microsoft says it considers the people and messages you interact with and keeps out noisy sources such as automated and bulk mail, and choosing "Always move to Other inbox" sends future mail from that sender straight to the second tab.[11]

That covers a lot of people. What these help pages do not describe is a daily digest of everything filtered out, snooze folders that work across clients, or reply drafts.[9][11]

06Fyxer and Inbox Zero: sorting and drafts inside Gmail or Outlook

Fyxer is the closest match to SaneBox's new Dinner plan. It labels incoming mail, can move categories into folders, drafts replies in your tone and, according to its own FAQ, does not send on your behalf; Pro is $37 per person per month billed yearly or $49 monthly, Team $64 or $99.[12] Several inboxes at once start at Team.[12]

Inbox Zero also sorts and labels, drafts in your voice and blocks cold email; Starter is $18 per user per month billed yearly, or $20 monthly.[13] Unlike SaneBox and Fyxer, its rules can also send replies, send new email or forward, depending on the actions you add to a rule once you switch it on.[14]

Both work with Google and Microsoft accounts.[12][14] If your address lives with Yahoo, a smaller provider or your own IMAP server, SaneBox covers more ground.[2]

07Mailstrom: clearing out mail in bulk

Mailstrom is built for clearing out a backlog. It finds bundles of related mail you can act on as a group, unsubscribes you from mailing lists and blocks unwanted senders or subjects; its home page says it connects to Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo over IMAP with OAuth2.[19] Every plan on the pricing page also lists Chill, Expire and Block.[15]

Basic costs $9 a month or $59.95 a year for one account and up to 10,000 emails, Plus $14 or $99.95 for three accounts, Pro $29.95 or $199.95 for 20 accounts with no inbox size limit.[15] The pricing and home pages do not describe reply drafts.[15][19] If your main goal is to empty an overloaded inbox once, it gives you tools for acting on large groups of messages at a time.

08Command Mail: one inbox where your own agent works

Command Mail does not sort inside your existing mailbox. You forward your addresses to a private inbound address in Command Mail; there each message is sorted into General, Social, Promotions, Updates or Forums, gets markers such as Appointment, Invoice, Deadline and Security, and receives percentage estimates for spam, fraud and phishing.[17] The morning brief collects decisions waiting for you, deadlines, pending replies and follow-ups that are due.[17]

Your own agent does the work on that mail. Claude, ChatGPT or Codex connect through the hosted MCP server, the CLI or REST, and you grant permissions one by one: mail:read reads and sorts, mail:draft saves drafts and never sends, mail:send-approved sends exactly the version you approved.[16] Sending on its own requires mail:send and a mailbox set to auto, and sending without approval starts switched off when you connect.[16]

How much the agent may change is set per mailbox: read, suggest, rules or auto; according to our app code, new mailboxes start on suggest unless your account default is read.[16] On suggest and rules, its direct sorting actions such as archiving, marking spam or moving to Trash become suggestions that wait for you, while, per our app code, markers and labels apply at once and an active retention period keeps running.[17] Rules you switch on yourself already act from suggest, the agent's rules only from rules, and at that level the agent may also create and switch on rules itself, again per our app code. On auto it acts directly.[16]

Everything agents and rules do lands in the activity log. Supported sorting actions can be undone there; sent and permanently deleted email cannot.[17] Free gives you one mailbox, the last 90 days, sorting, the morning brief and drafts without sending; Pro is €19 a month for the first 100 paying accounts and €29 after that, with sending and up to ten mailboxes.[16]

There are limits worth knowing. Forwarding is not sync, so anything your agent files in Command Mail stays as it was in Gmail or wherever the original lives.[17] The read permission covers every mailbox in the account, so autonomy levels do not separate read access. The operator is FYN Labs LLC in the United States and attachments are stored in Cloudflare's EU jurisdiction; for the risk assessment, the privacy page says sender, recipient, subject, up to 4,000 characters of text and attachment names go to TypeSafe (Jev), and according to our app code the names and instructions of any automatic labels you set up are sent as well.[18]

09When SaneBox is the better choice

SaneBox fits if you want to stay in the mailbox and app you have, whether that is Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo or another provider with folders. Its folders live on your server, so they show up in every client and on every device without forwarding or a new interface.[2]

It also wins if you rely on its smaller helpers: SaneBlackHole, snooze folders, reminders when someone has not replied, and the Daily Digest.[3] And if you want reply drafts without bringing your own agent and have up to four accounts, Dinner gives you both from one vendor.[1][5]

10When Command Mail fits

Command Mail fits if you already work with Claude, ChatGPT or Codex and want that agent to sort your mail, draft replies and, if you allow it, send, with permissions you set per connection.[16] One agent can be limited to reading and sorting while another only writes drafts.

It also fits if addresses at different providers should arrive in one place. Pro brings up to ten mailboxes together without a separate plan per account.[16]

11Who Command Mail is not for

If you want your mail sorted inside your current mailbox, stay with SaneBox or use what Gmail and Outlook offer. If you do not use an agent of your own, Command Mail still sorts and gives you the morning brief, but according to our app code it has no built-in writing assistant for customers; replies come from your own agent.[17] And if you depend on snooze folders and reminders in every email client, SaneBox has them.[3]

12Switching from SaneBox to Command Mail

  1. Create a mailbox in Command Mail and set up forwarding at your provider to the private inbound address it shows. Send a test message to confirm it arrives.[17]
  2. Connect your agent to https://commandmail.app/mcp and grant only mail:read and mail:draft at first.[16]
  3. Check in settings that the mailbox is on suggest, then watch for a week what the agent proposes and drafts.
  4. If you are on Pro, set up a sending route in the app.[17] According to our app code, your provider's SMTP server sends with your existing address; for Gmail aliases and plus addresses only if "Send mail as" is set up to match, and Outlook.com and Hotmail do not support this route. The Command Mail relay uses a Command Mail sender address and directs replies to your address.
  5. Only then cancel SaneBox. Choose whether to keep its folders or have their mail moved back to the inbox, and if you are within 30 days, ask support for a refund, since it is not issued automatically.[8]

13Which alternative for whom

  • Sorting at no extra cost: Gmail categories and filters, or Outlook's Focused Inbox.[9][11]
  • Sorting and drafts inside Gmail or Outlook: Fyxer, or Inbox Zero if rules should also be able to send.[12][14]
  • One thorough cleanup: Mailstrom.[15]
  • Your own agent with permissions per connection and a level per mailbox (reading stays account-wide): Command Mail.[16]
  • Staying in your current mailbox with almost any provider, drafts on Dinner: stay with SaneBox.[2][5]

Last checked: 2026-10-29. Statements about Command Mail also rest on the app code at commit d9ab36c. We have not run our own tests of SaneBox, Fyxer, Inbox Zero or Mailstrom.[1][12][13][15]

If you want to try Command Mail, start free at commandmail.app and connect your agent afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SaneBox cost?

On the pricing page checked on 2026-10-29: Snack is $9.49 a month, $65 a year or $109 for two years; Lunch is $15.99, $109 or $179; Dinner is $42.99, $319 or $529. Snack covers one email account, Lunch two, Dinner four. The pricing page lists a seven-day trial.

Can SaneBox write replies?

Yes. Since 2026-10-26, SaneDrafts puts reply drafts in your normal Drafts folder, and nothing goes out unless you send it yourself. SaneDrafts is part of the AI Bundle, which SaneBox says is included on the Dinner plan.

Does SaneBox read the body of my email?

SaneBox's FAQ and privacy policy say it only analyzes header data and never downloads the body. Its security page adds that optional features retrieve the body without storing it, and the AI Bundle announcement says full message bodies are not stored and email content is not used to train AI.

Is SaneBox available in German?

The SaneBox website, pricing page and help articles we retrieved on 2026-10-29 were in English, and we found no German version. Gmail, Outlook and Command Mail are available in German.

Is there a free SaneBox alternative?

Gmail's Default inbox sorts mail into tabs such as Promotions and Forums, and Outlook's Focused Inbox splits Focused from Other. Both come with your account; their help pages do not describe reply drafts. Command Mail Free sorts and lets your agent save drafts, but does not send.

Can I use SaneBox with Claude or ChatGPT?

The SaneBox pages we checked do not mention an API or an MCP connection for your own agent. Command Mail connects to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex over MCP, and you grant each permission separately.
