Apple Mail and AI: ChatGPT, Claude or Apple Intelligence
The Apple help pages for Mail and Apple Intelligence we reviewed describe no general mailbox access for ChatGPT, Claude or another outside AI agent to read your email on its own[4][7]. What Mail has built in is summaries, reply suggestions, categories and, in English, Siri AI[4][5][9]. If you want an agent to work through your email itself, you have three routes: Claude operates apps on your Mac through computer use, a local MCP server reaches into Apple Mail, or a forwarded copy goes to an inbox built for agents.
Command Mail is our product and stands for the third route here. We cover every route with its limits, because for many iPhone and Mac users Apple's own features already do the job.

01The short version
- For summaries, reply suggestions and categories, Apple Intelligence is enough; turn off summaries on a Mac under Mail → Settings → Viewing[4][7].
- To write with ChatGPT, set up the ChatGPT extension under System Settings → Siri → ChatGPT and use it from Writing Tools[11][13].
- To have Claude work with Apple Mail, use computer use in Cowork or a local MCP server; both need your Mac running[17][18].
- To have an agent work while your Mac is closed, forward your iCloud mail on iCloud.com under Settings → Mail Forwarding to Command Mail[22] and connect the agent there with narrow permissions[2].
02Which route fits which job?
The routes differ in whether the assistant sees your inbox at all, whether your Mac has to be on, and who ends up processing the content. The table summarizes the help pages and project READMEs in the sources; we have not run any of these routes with a real account.
| Route | Sees your inbox | Mac must be on | Sending | Who processes the content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence in Mail | Yes, on your devices[4] | No, also on iPhone and iPad[6] | You send[4] | Your device, Apple's Private Cloud Compute for complex requests[25] |
| Siri AI (beta, English and five other languages) | Searches mail on the device[9] | No, on supported iPhone and iPad models where Siri AI is offered[9] | Drafts on request[10] | Your device or Apple's servers, with daily limits[6] |
| ChatGPT extension | Only what you send with a request[12] | No[13] | Writes text, you send[13] | OpenAI[12] |
| Claude with computer use | Yes, through screenshots of apps you allow[17] | Yes, awake with Claude Desktop open[17] | Clicks and types in the app[17] | Anthropic |
| Local MCP server | Yes, through the Mail app, its files or IMAP[19][20][21] | Yes[19] | Depends on the server[19][20][21] | Whoever runs your assistant's model |
| Copy in Command Mail | Yes, the forwarded copy[1] | No | From Pro, optionally only after your approval[2] | FYN Labs LLC, Cloudflare, TypeSafe for parts of the mail data, and your agent's model provider[3] |
03What Apple Mail does with AI on its own
Apple Intelligence summarizes email in Mail, suggests replies and surfaces important messages. On a Mac, a short summary appears under each unread email automatically, and clicking Summarize at the top of an email condenses the whole thread[4].
Smart Reply drafts a reply in the email when you click it; you refine it with Writing Tools and send it yourself[4]. Mail also sorts incoming email into Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions[5]. Apple lists priority messages, personalized Smart Reply and Suggestions in Mail, the last one in English only[6].
Apple's Mac guide shows suggestions for actions such as adding a reminder or creating a calendar event while you read[4]. According to Apple's announcement, Suggestions in Mail can now also take actions with third-party apps[10]. A feature that works through your inbox on its own against your instructions is not described for Mail; fixed rules can reply to or forward email automatically while Mail is open[4].
With iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, Apple Intelligence runs on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPads and Macs with M1 or later, and MacBook Neo (A18 Pro)[6]. Device and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. Certain features that rely on server-side models, Siri AI among them, have daily usage limits[6].
Apple says many Apple Intelligence requests run entirely on the device. More complex ones use Private Cloud Compute, where, according to Apple, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple[25].
04What Siri AI adds in Mail
Siri AI, the new Siri in beta, can search your photos, mail, messages and calendar, for example for the details of a friend's flight from an email[9]. With Write with Siri it drafts text from scratch, summarizes and gives feedback on what you wrote[9]. Apple says that when you write in Mail, Siri can reflect how you usually write to each recipient, including punctuation and tone[10].
Siri AI starts in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish on Apple Intelligence devices, and it is not available to users under 13 or in China mainland[9]. In the EU, Siri AI and the features that rely on it are initially not available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch; Apple does not list the Mac under that restriction[9][10]. The Apple pages we reviewed describe no general mailbox access for outside agents such as Claude, while they do describe the ChatGPT extension and Suggestions in Mail taking actions with third-party apps[10][11].
05How to turn off Apple Intelligence in Mail
To turn off summaries on a Mac, choose Mail → Settings, click Viewing and turn off Summarize Message Previews[7]. Mail then shows the first lines of the most recent message instead[4]. Personalized replies are under Mail → Settings → Composing, where you turn off Personalize Smart Replies[7].
On iPhone, go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Mail and turn off Summarize Message Previews; Personalize Smart Replies is in the same place[8]. The same Apple pages list the switches for Siri AI, notification summaries and other features one by one[7][8].
06ChatGPT in Apple Mail: the Writing Tools and Siri extension
ChatGPT reaches Mail through Apple Intelligence's ChatGPT extension, which stays off until you set it up[12]. On a Mac, open System Settings, click Siri in the sidebar, then click ChatGPT and Set Up[11]. If you use Siri AI, click Set Up Extensions, click ChatGPT and turn on Use Extension[11][13].
On macOS 26 the setting sits under Apple Intelligence & Siri instead[13]. You do not need a ChatGPT account. If you sign in, requests are saved to your ChatGPT history and you get the capabilities of your plan[13].
Without Siri AI, open Writing Tools in a text field in Mail, choose Compose, describe what ChatGPT should write and review the result[13]. With Siri AI you write through Write with Siri, and OpenAI points to Apple's own instructions for that[13]. By default you are asked before a request goes to ChatGPT; without Siri AI you can turn that confirmation off, with Siri AI you cannot[13].
According to Apple, ChatGPT receives your request, attachments you choose to share and limited data such as time zone, country, device type and language, while your IP address is hidden[12]. Without an account, OpenAI must not store the information or its responses unless applicable law requires it, and must not use them for training. When you are signed in, your ChatGPT settings apply, and OpenAI may log requests, attachments and session history and use them to train its models[12].
According to OpenAI, Enterprise and Edu workspaces with data residency enabled cannot use the Apple Intelligence integration[13].
The ChatGPT app for macOS can work with other apps, but its list of supported apps names Apple Notes, Notion, TextEdit, Quip, code editors and terminals, and no mail app[14]. ChatGPT does not connect directly to local MCP servers such as the Apple Mail servers below; it connects to servers through a public HTTPS URL or a Secure MCP Tunnel[15]. Full MCP support with write actions is for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and Pro users can connect custom servers with read and fetch permissions[15].
07Claude and Apple Mail
On iPhone, the Claude app composes emails that open in Mail with subject and body filled in, and you send them yourself[16]. Anthropic says this works on all Claude plans. Claude does not read existing email this way; it only creates new content[16].
On a Mac, Claude can operate desktop apps you allow through computer use when no connector exists for a task, clicking, typing and moving between your apps[17]. That makes it a possible route for Apple Mail. Anthropic does not name Apple Mail in this help article, and we have not tested the flow. Computer use is a beta for Pro, Max and Ultra in Cowork and Claude Code inside Claude Desktop; Anthropic says Team and Enterprise plans do not have access at this time[17].
You turn it on in Claude Desktop under Settings → Capabilities (or Settings → System) with Enable computer use, then start a Cowork session, and Claude asks before it accesses each app[17]. Your Mac has to be awake with Claude Desktop open[17].
Anthropic is clear about the limits. Claude takes screenshots and can see everything visible in the apps you allow, there is no sandbox between Claude and your applications, and Anthropic says its prompt injection checks are not perfect[17]. It advises against using computer use on apps that hold other people's personal information and recommends watching Claude's work early on[17].
An inbox almost always holds other people's data. How instructions hidden in incoming email can steer an agent is covered in Prompt injection in email.
08Local MCP servers for Apple Mail
A local MCP server runs on your Mac and gives an assistant such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code tools for Apple Mail[18][19]. Claude Desktop installs these as desktop extensions in the .mcpb format: go to Settings → Desktop app and click Manage next to Extensions, or for your own package use Advanced settings and Install Extension…[18].
We looked at three projects on 2026-10-31. GitHub stars show attention, not active users or a security review, and we have not run any of these servers.
apple-mail-mcp by patrickfreyer (MIT, 245 stars, last GitHub push 2026-10-28) reads, searches, composes, organizes and sends, and ships an .mcpb package and a Claude Code plugin[19]. With --read-only it refuses to send and removes forwarding while still allowing drafts. It needs Mail running and Automation and Mail Data Access permissions[19].
apple-mail-mcp by sweetrb (MIT, 105 stars, last GitHub push 2026-10-31) reads, searches and sends and can turn Mail rules on or off; it can also talk to IMAP and SMTP directly with passwords kept in the macOS Keychain[20]. Its README says the send tool delivers immediately and cannot be unsent, and asks the assistant to confirm recipients, subject and body with you first[20]. That is an instruction to the model; the README does not describe a switch like --read-only.
apple-mail-mcp by imdinu (GPL-3.0, 74 stars, last GitHub push 2026-10-08) has eight tools for reading, searching and extracting email plus a full-text index over all message bodies[21]. The index needs Full Disk Access for the app that launches it, and the README describes no sending tools[21].
All three only work while your Mac is on. They can reach Apple Mail data across accounts; account filters or a default account are not a documented access boundary, and the actual reach depends on the server and how you configure it[19][20][21]. The trade-offs between local and hosted servers are in IMAP MCP or hosted MCP, and more servers are compared against stated criteria in Email MCP servers compared.
09Forwarding a copy of your iCloud mail to Command Mail
With a forwarded copy, your agent works in Command Mail and does not need your Mac. You keep Apple Mail as your mail app. Whatever the agent archives or deletes in Command Mail leaves your iCloud mailbox alone, because forwarding only sends copies of new email[1][22].
This adds another operator. Command Mail is run by FYN Labs LLC in the United States, the app and database run on Cloudflare, and attachments are stored in Cloudflare's EU jurisdiction[3]. For spam and phishing checks, parts of incoming email go to the provider TypeSafe[3]. According to the app code, further excerpts may go to TypeSafe when you open an incoming email's agent panel or the list of similar emails in the web app; the exact fields are listed in Privacy of AI email assistants.
10Prerequisites
You need a Command Mail account. Free covers one mailbox with the last 90 days for reading, search, sorting and drafts, and it does not send. Sending and up to ten mailboxes start with Pro, which costs €19 a month for the first 100 paying Pro accounts for as long as their subscription runs and €29 after that[2].
You also need access to iCloud.com and, to send from your iCloud address, an app-specific password, which requires two-factor authentication on your Apple Account[23]. An agent that speaks MCP, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, comes last.
11Set up forwarding step by step
- In Command Mail, add the address under Settings → Connections, in the Addresses section under Connect a mailbox, or run
commandmail mailboxes connect me@icloud.com; Command Mail then shows the private intake address for it[1]. - Sign in at icloud.com/mail, open the menu at the top of the Mailboxes list and choose Settings[22].
- Select Mail Forwarding in the sidebar, tick "Forward my email to" and enter the intake address[22].
- Leave "Delete messages after forwarding" unticked while you test. Otherwise iCloud keeps no copy for Apple Mail to show[22].
- Connect your agent, for example in Claude Code with
claude mcp add --transport http commandmail https://commandmail.app/mcp, and grant onlymail:readandmail:draftat first[2].
To forward only some email, create a rule on iCloud.com instead; each rule takes one forwarding address[22]. If you set up a custom email domain with iCloud+, mail to those addresses is forwarded as well[22]. If Apple Mail also holds Gmail or Outlook accounts, set up forwarding at those providers; All your email addresses in one inbox walks through it.
12Sending from your iCloud address
On Pro you set up replies from your iCloud address per address in Command Mail under Settings → Connections[1]. For addresses on icloud.com, me.com and mac.com, the app code fills in smtp.mail.me.com on port 587, matching Apple's server settings[24]. Command Mail signs in once to check the details before it saves the sending route and stores the password encrypted.
Create the app-specific password at account.apple.com in the Sign-In and Security section under App-Specific Passwords[23]. You can have up to 25 active ones and revoke each separately. When you change or reset your Apple Account password, Apple revokes all app-specific passwords, and you need a new one[23].
Only a person in the app can set up a sending route; according to the app code, an agent token cannot. If you would rather not store a password, use Command Mail's relay: you confirm your address with a code, and Command Mail sends from its own address with Reply-To set to yours.
13Connect the agent with narrow permissions
Command Mail is listed in the Claude directory as a community connector and in ChatGPT as a plugin; whether you can install and use plugins depends on your ChatGPT plan, workspace, role and region[2]. For ChatGPT to save drafts it needs write tools. To start, mail:read for reading and sorting and mail:draft for drafts that never send are enough[2].
mail:send-approved sends exactly the draft revision you approved, provided your plan and sending route allow it and the sending mailbox is not set to read; mail:send allows sending without approval from mailboxes set to auto[2]. mail:read reads every mailbox in your account. The autonomy level per mailbox controls what the agent may change there and does not separate access. New mailboxes start on suggest, or on read if the account default is read; details are in Permissions and autonomy.
14Did it work?
Send a test email from another account to your iCloud address. It should show up in Apple Mail and shortly after in Command Mail[1][22]. Then ask your agent for your latest email; it should name the test message with subject and sender.
To check sending, reply to the test address and look at the sender there. Over SMTP it shows your iCloud address; over the relay it shows the Command Mail address with Reply-To set to yours. Whether the reply also lands in your iCloud Sent folder is something we have not checked.
For Apple Intelligence, check in Mail itself: unread emails show a summary underneath, and an open email has Summarize at the top[4].
15Troubleshooting
Mail shows no summaries. Check that your device supports Apple Intelligence and that device and Siri language are the same supported language[6]. Then check under Mail → Settings → Viewing that Summarize Message Previews is on[4].
There is no ChatGPT option in System Settings. Siri language and device language have to match here too, and the extension only exists where both Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are available[13]. Enterprise or Edu workspaces with data residency cannot connect[13].
The local MCP server says Mail is not responding. Open the Mail app and check under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation that the app launching the server may control Mail[19].
The iCloud SMTP sign-in fails. Check that you entered an app-specific password, not your Apple Account password. If you recently changed your Apple Account password, every older app-specific password has been revoked[23].
New iCloud email does not reach Command Mail. On iCloud.com, check under Settings → Mail Forwarding that "Forward my email to" is ticked and the intake address is right[22]. If a rule forwards only some email, only its conditions apply.
16Next steps
Start with the smallest route that solves your problem. Apple Intelligence covers summaries, the ChatGPT extension covers one-off writing. If an agent should really work through your email, give it read and draft permissions for the first week and widen them once you know how it works.
Start Command Mail for free, forward your iCloud address and connect your agent.
17Sources and date
As of 2026-10-31. All Apple, OpenAI and Anthropic help pages, the three GitHub projects and Command Mail's public pages were retrieved that day. Statements about the prefilled iCloud outgoing server, the sign-in check, encrypted password storage, the relay and that only a person sets up a sending route also rest on the app code at commit ae32456 (smtp-presets.ts, send-routes.ts, api/addresses/[id]/sending). This guide does not claim a run with real accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect ChatGPT to Apple Mail?
For writing and editing text, yes. The ChatGPT extension in Apple Intelligence works in Writing Tools in Mail and with Siri, and it processes requests and content you explicitly send it. Apple and OpenAI do not describe general mailbox access for it, and the ChatGPT app for macOS does not list Mail among the apps it works with.
Can Claude read my email in Apple Mail?
On a Mac it is possible, through computer use in Cowork (a beta on Pro, Max and Ultra) or a local MCP server in Claude Desktop or Claude Code. Computer use operates desktop apps you allow; Anthropic does not name Apple Mail specifically. Both need the Mac running. The Claude app on iPhone composes emails that open pre-filled in Mail, but according to Anthropic it does not read existing email.
How do I turn off AI summaries in Apple Mail?
On a Mac, choose Mail > Settings, click Viewing and turn off Summarize Message Previews. On iPhone, go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Mail and turn it off there. Mail then shows the first lines of the most recent message again.
Can Siri AI search my email?
Apple says Siri AI can search your mail, messages and calendar and draft an email from scratch. It is a beta in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish to start, on Apple Intelligence devices with macOS 27 or iOS 27. In the EU it is initially not available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch; Apple does not list the Mac under that restriction.
Does my Mac have to stay on for an agent to handle my iCloud email?
With computer use and the local MCP servers described here, yes, because they run on your Mac; depending on the server they go through the Mail app, local mail files or IMAP and SMTP directly. If you forward your iCloud mail to Command Mail, the agent works with the copy there and does not need your Mac.
