Canary Mail alternatives: AI clients, encryption, your own agent
If you are looking for a Canary Mail alternative, the right one depends on why you are leaving: Spark if you want an AI email client you can pay for monthly, with local access for your own agents; Apple Mail or Thunderbird if you want to pay nothing; Proton Mail for end-to-end encryption; Dove, from the same company, if you want AI at the centre; and Command Mail if your own agent, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, should work in your inbox.[10][11][14][19][22][7][25] Canary itself is still a strong pick for a cheap client on every device, with triage that runs locally and PGP in Pro+.[1][3]
Command Mail is our product. Everything said here about Canary, Spark, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Proton and Dove comes from their pricing, help and privacy pages, retrieved on 2026-10-30; we have not tested these apps ourselves.[1][7][10][14][19][22]

01What Canary Mail does well
Canary works with the email accounts you already have. It connects Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange and IMAP and shows them in one unified inbox; your mail stays with your provider, and Canary syncs it and displays it on your device.[3][1] There are apps for macOS, iOS, Windows and Android, and a single licence covers all four; Canary's help says the Mac and Windows versions differ mainly in notifications, shortcuts and the setup flow.[1][5]
It is inexpensive. Free costs nothing, Growth with the AI Copilot is $36 a year and Pro+ is $100 a year, and both paid plans are also sold as a one-time lifetime purchase for $100 and $300.[1] The trial runs for seven days without a credit card and drops you back to Free at the end.[1]
Part of the AI runs on your device. According to Canary's AI page, triage, prioritization and categorization happen locally and keep working offline for mail you have already downloaded; drafts, summaries and answers to questions use hosted models, and your email is not used to train generalized models.[3] You can switch the AI off completely and use Canary as a plain email client.[3]
Pro+ adds security tools for sensitive mail: PGP encryption, SecureSend, phishing and ransomware detection, impersonation detection and a warning when you are about to send to the wrong person.[1] Even Free includes basic read receipts, snooze, templates and unlimited email accounts.[1]
02Why people look for a Canary Mail alternative
Billing is one reason. Canary's FAQ says there is no monthly subscription; you pay yearly or once, and you buy inside the app, since the pricing page is for reference only.[1][2] If you would rather pay month to month and stop whenever you like, Spark and Dove offer that.[10][8]
The plan tiers are another. The AI Copilot starts with Growth, PGP and SecureSend need Pro+, and Free is limited to two devices.[1] Every plan is a single-user licence, and Canary's help notes that a shared inbox needs a separate licence.[2]
The third reason is your own agent. If you already work with Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, you may want that agent to handle your email; the Canary pages we retrieved do not describe an API, CLI or MCP access for that.[1][3][6] And every Canary page we retrieved also promotes a second app from the same maker, Dove, which raises the question of which one fits you; the difference is covered below.[1][7]

04Spark: the closest match, with monthly billing
Spark, like Canary, is an AI email client for existing accounts on every device. When we retrieved the pricing page it showed euros: Free at €0 with unlimited accounts, Plus at €10 a month or €99 a year, and Pro at €22 a month or €229 a year, per user.[10] So you can pay monthly; for a year, the page listed Spark Plus at €99, while Canary lists Growth at $36 on its US pricing page, so the two are quoted in different currencies.[10][1]
Spark's AI features run on Azure OpenAI Service. Spark's help says prompts and email text go there only to deliver the feature, are not used for training and are kept for no more than 30 days, and that Spark itself does not store them.[12] For notifications, Send Later and team features Spark uses servers on Google Cloud in the US, where it stores an access token, or for AOL, Exchange and custom IMAP accounts your login and password, encrypted.[13]
For your own agents, Spark offers a local interface. Spark CLI connects agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and OpenClaw to your email, calendar, contacts and meeting notes, and it needs Spark Desktop running on a Mac or Windows machine.[11] On Free and Plus the agent can read and search and start plain-text drafts through mailto links; formatted drafts, archiving, labels and sending come with Pro.[11] For a side-by-side look, see Spark vs Command Mail.
05Apple Mail with Apple Intelligence: already on your iPhone
If you mainly use Canary on an iPhone, look at Apple Mail first. It sorts incoming mail into Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions by itself, though Apple notes this is not available in every country or region.[14] Time-sensitive messages from the other categories also show up in Primary, and you can move a sender to another category by hand.[14]
Apple Intelligence adds summaries and help with replies. A short summary appears under each email in the inbox, Summarize condenses a whole conversation, and Smart Reply helps you answer quickly.[15][16] Apple says this needs an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 model or later on iOS 27, in a supported language such as English.[17]
Many requests are handled on the device. More complex ones go to Private Cloud Compute, whose data Apple says is not stored or made accessible to Apple, and you can generate a report of those requests on your iPhone.[18] Read receipts, PGP or access for your own agents are not described on the help pages we read.[14][15]
06Thunderbird: free, open source, with OpenPGP
Thunderbird is the obvious choice if your email client should cost nothing. Mozilla describes it as free forever and funded by donations; it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, Thunderbird Mobile runs on Android, and the code is open source.[19][20] Email, calendars and contacts live in one app, with an optional unified inbox across accounts.[19]
Encryption is part of the app. Since version 78 Thunderbird includes OpenPGP and no longer needs extra software for it, and on Android it encrypts together with the free OpenKeychain app.[21][20] The Thunderbird pages we checked describe no AI features such as summaries or drafts, and they list no iPhone app.[19][20]
07Proton Mail: an encrypted provider, not a client
Proton Mail solves a different problem from Canary. It is an email service with end-to-end and zero-access encryption, which Proton says means not even Proton can read your messages, and it comes with a Proton address.[22] Free costs nothing, Mail Plus is $4.99 a month or $47.88 a year, and Proton Unlimited is $12.99 a month or $119.88 a year.[22]
Proton Scribe is its writing assistant. It drafts and improves emails in the web app and in the desktop app on macOS, running either on Proton's servers or, in English only, as a local model on your computer.[23] Scribe is included in Duo, Family, Visionary and Lifetime, and other paid Mail plans can try it for 14 days.[23]
To keep using a familiar client, there is Proton Mail Bridge. It requires a paid plan and makes your Proton mailbox available through a local IMAP and SMTP server to Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail.[24] Canary's help centre also has guides for adding Proton Mail to Canary.[6]
08Dove: the new inbox from Canary's maker
Dove comes from Cartasec, the company behind Canary, and is built around AI.[7][9] It splits incoming mail into Focus, Feed and Noise, writes a Today overview of what needs you, and answers questions about your inbox through Ask Dove, drafting replies for you to review.[7] You can describe rules in plain language, and every email gets a risk score.[7]
Dove has one paid plan, Pro, at $20 a month or $200 a year.[8] Free keeps the core inbox for unlimited accounts with ten AI actions a day; the seven-day trial asks for a card and starts charging on day eight unless you cancel first.[8] Dove runs on the web, macOS, iOS, Android and Windows and connects Gmail, Microsoft accounts, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP.[7]
Its privacy policy says some models, such as the Smart Inbox, are trained and run on your device. For drafts, summaries and chat Dove sends text snippets to third-party AI providers that may not train on them; email content is kept locally where possible, limited metadata sits on Dove's servers, and data may be processed in Singapore, the US, Europe and elsewhere.[9]
09Command Mail: an inbox for your own agent
Command Mail is not a client for your existing mailbox. You forward your addresses to a private inbound address in Command Mail, where every email gets a percentage score for spam, fraud and phishing, and where categories such as General, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums and markers such as appointment, invoice, deadline and security are available.[26]
According to our app code, Command Mail files mail into those categories by itself only on the auto level; on suggest and rules, filing is up to you, your rules and your agent's suggestions. Spam detected by the classifier is only suggested there, though rules that are already active can still move it directly. The morning brief collects decisions, deadlines, open replies and follow-ups that are due, and you use it all through an installable web app with web push.[26]
Your own agent does the work. Claude, ChatGPT or Codex connect through the hosted MCP server, the CLI or REST, and you grant permissions one by one: mail:read reads and sorts, mail:draft saves drafts and never sends, mail:send-approved sends exactly the version you approved.[25] An agent can send on its own only with mail:send and only from mailboxes set to auto, and sending without approval starts switched off when you connect.[25]
You decide per mailbox how much the agent may change: read, suggest, rules or auto. According to our app code, new mailboxes start on suggest unless your account default is read.[25] On suggest and rules, direct sorting actions such as archive, spam or trash become suggestions that wait for you; flags and labels apply straight away according to the app code, and a retention period that is already active keeps running.[26] Rules you switch on yourself work from suggest, the agent's rules only from rules, where the agent may also create and enable rules itself.[25]
The activity log shows what agents and rules did. Supported sorting actions can be undone there; sent mail and permanently deleted mail cannot.[26] Free gives you one mailbox, the last 90 days, sorting, the morning brief and drafts without sending; Pro costs €19 a month for the first 100 paying accounts and €29 after that, or €190 and €290 a year, with sending and up to ten mailboxes.[25]
Know the limits. Forwarding is not sync: whatever your agent sorts in Command Mail stays unchanged at your original provider.[26] The read permission covers every mailbox in your account, so autonomy levels do not separate read access, and according to our app code Command Mail does not decrypt PGP-encrypted mail.[25]
The operator is FYN Labs LLC in the United States, and attachments are stored in Cloudflare's EU region.[27] For risk scoring, the privacy policy says sender, recipients, subject, up to 4,000 characters of text and attachment names of incoming mail go to the service provider TypeSafe (Jev); our app code also sends the sender's display name and, if you set up automatic labels, their names and instructions.[27] Opening the agent panel for an email or the list of similar emails in the web app sends further excerpts there, according to the app code; AI email assistant privacy lists the fields.
10When Canary Mail is the better choice
Canary is the better fit if you want an email client for your existing accounts on every device and want to spend little. Growth costs $36 a year, or $100 once as a lifetime licence, against $200 a year for Dove Pro, and one licence covers Mac, iPhone, Windows and Android.[1][8]
It also wins if local processing and encryption matter to you. Triage and prioritization run on the device, the AI can be switched off entirely, and Pro+ encrypts with PGP and SecureSend.[3][1] Command Mail, by contrast, needs forwarding, processes your mail on its servers and has no PGP handling.[26][27]
11When Command Mail fits
Command Mail fits if you already work with Claude, ChatGPT or Codex and want that agent to sort your mail, draft replies and, if you allow it, send, with permissions you set for each connection.[25] One agent might only read and sort, another only write drafts, and nothing has to run on your desktop.
It also fits if addresses from different providers should arrive in one place, already sorted for your agent. Pro bundles up to ten mailboxes, and the morning brief summarizes them together.[25][26]
12Who Command Mail is not for
If you want a native email client with apps for Mac, iPhone, Windows and Android, Canary or Spark will serve you better, and Thunderbird if you want a free one for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.[1][10][19] If you do not use your own agent, Command Mail still gives you categories and the morning brief, but according to our app code no built-in writing assistant.[26] And if you need end-to-end encryption, choose Proton Mail, or PGP in Canary Pro+ or Thunderbird.[22][1][21]
13Switching from Canary to Command Mail
- Create a mailbox in Command Mail and set up forwarding at your email provider, for example in Gmail or Outlook, to the private inbound address shown. Send a test email to confirm it arrives.[26]
- Connect your agent to
https://commandmail.app/mcpand give itmail:readandmail:draftto begin with.[25] - Check in settings that the mailbox is on suggest, and spend a week watching what the agent proposes and drafts.
- If you are on Pro, set up a sending route in the app so you can reply.[26] According to our app code you can send through your provider's SMTP server from your existing address; Gmail alias and plus addresses need a matching "Send mail as" setup, and Outlook.com and Hotmail do not work this way. Through the Command Mail relay, recipients see a Command Mail sender address and replies go to your address.
- You can keep using your current client alongside, because your mail stays with your provider. Canary's FAQ says you cancel a yearly plan in your app store's subscription settings; it stays active until the end of the period and then moves to Free.[1]
14Which alternative suits whom
- Pay nothing: Thunderbird on desktop and Android, Apple Mail on the iPhone.[19][14]
- AI email client with monthly billing: Spark, with local agent access that can act on Pro.[10][11]
- End-to-end encryption: Proton Mail, and Bridge if you want your usual client.[22][24]
- AI at the centre, from the same maker: Dove.[7][8]
- Your own agent with permissions per connection and a level per mailbox (read access stays account-wide): Command Mail.[25]
- A cheap client with on-device triage and PGP: stay with Canary.[1][3]
As of 2026-10-30. Statements about Command Mail also rely on the app code at commit 2761576, including the absence of PGP handling. We have not run our own tests of the other apps.
If you want to try Command Mail, start free at commandmail.app and connect your agent afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Canary Mail cost?
On the pricing page we checked on 2026-10-30, Free costs nothing and covers up to two devices. Growth is $36 a year or a one-time $100, Pro+ is $100 a year or a one-time $300, each for up to five devices. Canary's FAQ says there is no monthly plan, and the seven-day trial needs no credit card.
What is a free alternative to Canary Mail?
Thunderbird is free and open source and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android; OpenPGP is built into the desktop app, and on Android it works together with OpenKeychain. Apple Mail comes with the iPhone and sorts mail into categories. Spark and Dove have free plans with limits, and Command Mail Free sorts and drafts with your own agent but does not send.
What is the difference between Canary Mail and Dove?
Both come from Cartasec. Canary is a conventional email client where AI is optional and you pay yearly or once; Dove is a newer app built around AI that splits mail into Focus, Feed and Noise and costs $20 a month or $200 a year. Dove also runs in a web browser.
Does Canary Mail work on Windows and Android?
Yes. The pricing page lists macOS, iOS, Windows and Android, and one licence covers all of them up to the device limit. Canary's help notes small differences between Mac and Windows, such as notifications and the setup flow.
Can I use Canary Mail with Claude or ChatGPT?
The Canary pages we retrieved on 2026-10-30 do not describe an API, CLI or MCP access for your own agents. Spark offers local agent access through Spark CLI, and Command Mail offers a hosted MCP server with permissions per connection.
Is Canary Mail private?
Canary's privacy policy says it does not collect message content by default and keeps it on your device, and that your mail is not used to train AI. Push notifications and Cloud Sync store some data on Canary's servers for a short time, and Copilot sends text to hosted models from providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. PGP is part of Pro+.
